Which bank is at the Harpenden Banking Hub on which day?
The counter is open to everyone, every weekday. On top of that, each bank sends its own community banker on a set day, so you can sit down in a private space and deal with things that need your own bank.
| Day | Community banker | Banker available |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | HSBC | 9am to 5pm |
| Tuesday | NatWest | 9am to 4.45pm |
| Wednesday | Santander | 9am to 5pm |
| Thursday | Barclays | 9am to 5pm |
| Friday | Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland | 9am to 5pm |
If your bank is not on the list, you can still use the counter for everyday transactions. Check with your bank or building society for what is available to you.
What you can do at the counter, whoever you bank with
The counter is run with the Post Office and is open all day, Monday to Friday, to customers of the major UK banks and building societies. You can:
- Withdraw cash, in notes and coins
- Pay in cash, in notes and coins
- Pay in cheques
- Pay utility bills
- Check your account balance
- Top up gas and electricity
- Collect change (registered business customers only)
Services and limits are set by your own bank, and some banks may charge for certain services. Take your bank card, and check with your bank if you are unsure what you can do.
When to see your community banker
Community bankers handle the things you would once have queued at a branch for, such as:
- Payments and transfers
- Managing your account, statements and personal details
- Card and PIN problems, and replacement cheque books
- Getting started with, or fixing problems with, online and telephone banking
- Help with money worries, fraud concerns and complaints
- Bereavement, and setting up someone to manage your affairs
Exactly what each banker can help with varies by bank, and for some requests they will connect you with a specialist team. Community bankers may not be available over lunchtime, so it is worth arriving earlier or later in the day.
How Harpenden got its banking hub
Harpenden once had six banks, according to the Harpenden History Society, but one by one the branches closed, with HSBC and Barclays among the last to go in 2023. A public engagement exercise by Harpenden Town Council that year found that losing local banks had a significant impact on residents and businesses.
The Town Council campaigned for close to three years for a banking hub and offered space at Harpenden Town Hall as a stopgap. The interim hub opened there in December 2024 and recorded more than 12,500 customer visits.
The hub moved to its permanent home at 35 High Street in June 2026. It was officially opened on Friday 26 June by Derek French of the Harpenden History Society, a long-time campaigner for the hub, with the Mayor, Cllr Kirsti Wenn, and John Howells, Chief Executive of LINK, among the guests.
“The Town Council, together with Cash Access UK, are thrilled that banking services in Harpenden are now permanently available in a central location.”
Cllr Kirsti Wenn, Mayor of Harpenden
Tips for using the Banking Hub
- Check the day: go on your bank’s day if you need a community banker. Tuesday’s NatWest banker finishes at 4.45pm.
- Bring your card: take your bank card and PIN for counter transactions.
- Avoid lunchtime if you need a banker, as they may be on a break.
- Need Saturday banking? Harpenden Post Office, a few doors away at 29 High Street, offers everyday banking for most banks and is also open on Saturdays.
- Businesses: register with your bank to collect change, and plan ahead around busy periods such as the run-up to Christmas.
