The Engineer is a pub on St Johns Road in Southdown, at the junction with Cravells Road. Originally called the Bird in Hand, it was renamed the Engineer when the railway was built through Harpenden in 1868.
It serves four regular cask ales, Tring Side Pocket for a Toad, Adnams Ghost Ship, Sharp’s Doom Bar and Theakston XB, and shows most major sporting events in its public bar. Freshly prepared food is served in the conservatory restaurant, using local suppliers where possible, and there is a garden and a function room.
The pub is family and dog friendly, with parking. It holds a quiz on Tuesday evenings and offers a discount on cask ale on Mondays.
